Inspiration

The genesis of Mobilis lies with my fascination with framing light to create a spatial environment. Frames narrow our focus and amplify our perceptions. Just as the camera's viewfinder distills its surroundings into a distinct image, I want to develop a product that captures a unique view.

My love of travel and the surreal landscapes of the American West have deeply affected my vision for this project. An interest in using modern materials that work harmoniously with the environment also influenced my thinking. My goal is to use high tech materials to address the topics of space and light, encouraging people to interact with the environment.

I have drawn inspiration from the art of James Turrell, whose work alters our perception of space and time. In his sky space instillations time slows down, color is greatly amplified and one is suddenly keenly aware of their surroundings. I am also enamored with the work of Fred Sandback, whose string sculptures create planes and define space. The films of Michelangelo Antonioni and Philippe Garrel have also been an influential in my work.

Andrea Zittel has also been an inspiration. Her A-Z Escape Vehicles are a series of personal fantasies come to life. The work is witty and acknowledges the relationship between the designer and the end user. She stresses the need for consumers to redefine objects within the context of their own needs.
